Control of the House is On The Line

All 435 seats in the House are up for election on November 5, 2024. According to the Cook Report, 22 seats are toss ups, meaning they are competitive and either party has a good chance of winning. Eleven toss up seats are currently held by Democrats, and eleven toss ups seats are held by Republicans.

Arizona

Primary: July 30

District AZ-01

Incumbent: David Schweikert (R)

Schweikert was one of 147 Republicans who formally supported objection to counting Joe Biden’s electoral votes.

District AZ-06

Incumbent: Juan Ciscomani (R)

Candidates for the July 30 Democratic primary include Kirsten Engel, Jack O’Donnel, and Vieri Tenuta.

Kirsten Engel graduated with honors from Brown University and Northwestern University’s School of Law, and later held positions at the Massachusetts Office of Attorney General and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Engel has served as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives and as a member of the Arizona State Senate. In 2022, she ran to represent Arizona’s 6th congressional district but lost to Juan Ciscomani (R) in a close election (49.2% vs. 50.7%).

District CA-13

Incumbent: John Duarte (R)

Adam Gray (D) is running in the general election against Republican incumbent John Duarte. Gray (Democratic Party) was a member of the California State Assembly, representing District 21. He assumed office on December 3, 2012. He left office on December 5, 2022.

Adam Gray was born in Merced, California. Gray's career experience includes working as a legislative aide with the California State Legislature and an assistant lecturer with the University of California at Merced.

Incumbent: David Valadao (R)

Rudy Salas (D) is running in the general election against Republican incumbent David Valadao. Salas (Democratic Party) was a member of the California State Assembly, representing District 32. He assumed office on December 3, 2012. He left office on December 5, 2022.

Rudy Salas earned a degree in political science and history from the University of California at Los Angeles in 2000.

Will Rollins is running in the general election against Republican incumbent Ken Calvert. Will was born in Torrance, California. He earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 2007 and a juris doctor from Columbia Law School in 2012. His career experience includes working as an assistant U.S. attorney.

Colorado

Primary: June 25, 2024

District CO-08

Incumbent: Yadira Caraveo (D)

Yadira Caraveo graduated from Northglenn High School and earned a B.S. in biology from Regis University and an M.D. from the University of Colorado. Caraveo's career experience includes working as a pediatrician in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Thornton, Colorado.

Her organizational affiliations include serving as the assistant secretary of the Adams County Democratic Party, as a member of the Anythink Library System Board of Trustees, and as a board member for the Early Childhood Partnership of Adams County and the Colorado Behavioral Health Transformation Council.

Maine

Primary: June 11, 2024

District ME-02

Incumbent: Jared Golden (D)

Jared Golden (Democratic Party) is a member of the U.S. House, representing Maine's 2nd Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 2019. His current term ends on January 3, 2025.

Golden (Democratic Party) is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent Maine's 2nd Congressional District. He is on the ballot in the Democratic primary on June 11, 2024.

Golden's election was decided by ranked-choice voting. This was the first general election in Maine for which ranked-choice voting was law, and this race was the first in U.S. history where the process was used to decide a congressional election.

Prior to joining Congress, Golden served in the Maine House of Representatives, representing District 60 from 2014 to 2018.

Golden served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Marine. He graduated from Bates College. Golden worked as a staffer for Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Michigan

Primary: August 6, 2024

District MI-07

Democratic incumbent Elissa Slotkin has declared her candidacy for the Senate seat occupied by Debbie Stabenow (D) who is retiring at the end of this term. Curtis Hertel is now running in the Democratic primary and Tom Barrett is running in the Republican primary.

Hertel (Democratic Party) was a member of the Michigan State Senate, representing District 23. He assumed office on January 1, 2015. He left office on January 1, 2023. Hertel has served as the Ingham County Register of Deeds.

Hertel earned his bachelor's degree from the James Madison College at Michigan State University in political science. In 2001, Hertel was elected Ingham County Commissioner. He served until 2008. During that time, he served as Constituent Relations Director for the House Democratic Caucus. He was elected as the Ingham County Register of Deeds. His first term was from 2008 to 2012.

For six years, Hertel worked for the Department of Community Health. He also served as the Department’s legislative liaison. Hertel is the president of the Michigan Association of Register of Deeds, a member of the Sierra Club and member of the local Rotary Club.

District MI-08

Incumbent: Open: Kildee (D)

Kildee was first elected to the House in 2012. He succeeded his uncle, Dale Kildee (D), who held the seat for 36 years. Kildee was re-elected in 2018. Kildee announced on November 16, 2023, that he would not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

New Jersey

Primary: June 4, 2024

District NJ-07

Incumbent: Thomas Kean Jt. (R)

Susan Altman is a candidate for the Democratic primary on June 4. She played college basketball at Columbia University and professional basketball abroad, earned two graduate degrees from Oxford University in the UK—one in International Policy and the other in Business. For the last several years, Sue has served as Executive Director of the New Jersey Working Families Alliance, a non-profit organization focused primarily on combating political corruption in Trenton.

New Mexico

District NM-02

Incumbent: Gabe Vasquez (D)

The Republican candidate is Yvette Herrell. She was one of 147 Republicans who formally supported objection to counting Joe Biden’s electoral votes.

Gabriel Vasquez (also known as Gabe) is a member of the U.S. House representing New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 2023, and is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District.

Gabriel Vasquez was born in and lives in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Vasquez earned a bachelor’s degree in English and journalism from New Mexico State University in 2008. His career experience includes working as a journalist, in public relations, as executive director of the Hispano Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces, and as the field representative for U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM). Vasquez served as the district 3 city council for the City of Las Cruces.

North Carolina

District NC-01

Incumbent Donald Davis (D) will be running against Republican Laurie Buckhout and Libertarian Tom Bailey.

Donald Davis was born in Snow Hill, North Carolina.[1] Davis served in the United States Air Force and reached the rank of captain.[2][3] He earned a B.S. in social sciences from the United States Air Force Academy, an M.S. in administration from Central Michigan University, an M.A. in sociology from East Carolina University, and an Ed.D. in educational leadership from East Carolina University. Davis' career experience includes working as a college instructor, admissions advisor, and lay minister.

District OH-09

Incumbent Marcy Kaptur (D) is running against Republican Derek Merrin.

Marcy Kaptur (Democratic Party) is a member of the U.S. House, representing Ohio's 9th Congressional District. She assumed office on January 3, 1983. Her current term ends on January 3, 2025.

Kaptur (Democratic Party) is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent Ohio's 9th Congressional District. She is on the ballot in the general election on November 5, 2024. During the 115th Congress, Kaptur was the longest-serving woman currently in Congress and the second-longest-serving women in congressional history. She served on House Appropriations Committee and was the ranking member of the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee.

Kaptur was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1946 and attended St. Ursula Academy. Kaptur received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Wisconsin in 1968 and a master's in urban planning from the University of Michigan in 1974. Kaptur worked as an urban planner with the Toledo-Lucas County Plan Commissions from 1969 to 1975 before becoming director of planning at the National Center for Urban Ethnic Affairs from 1975 to 1977. Kaptur served as an urban policy advisor in the Jimmy Carter (D) administration from 1977 to 1979 and was pursuing a doctorate in urban affairs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when she first ran for election in 1982.

Incumbent: Emilia Sykes (D)

Democratic incumbent Emilia Sykes will be running against Kevin Coughlin (R) and Liam Walker (George Wallace Party) in the general election on November 5, 2024.

Emilia Sykes served as state House minority leader from 2019 to 2021. She was born in Akron, Ohio. Sykes earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Kent State University and a juris doctor and master's degree in public health from the University of Florida. Her career experience includes working as an administrative staff advisor with the Summit County Fiscal Office and a law clerk to the chief justice of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

Incumbent: Matt Cartwright (D)

Democratic incumbent Matt Cartwright will be running against Republican Rob Bresnahan Jr. in the general election on November 5, 2024.

Matt Cartwright (Democratic Party) is a member of the U.S. House, representing Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 2019. His current term ends on January 3, 2025. Cartwright is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District.

Cartwright graduated from Hamilton College in 1983, and then he earned his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. While an undergraduate, he studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and he met his future wife, Marion Munley.

After law school, he practiced law in Philadelphia for several years before relocating to Scranton to work with his father-in-law's firm.[1] Prior to joining Congress, he worked as a lawyer with the firm Munley, Munley & Cartwright for 25 years.
